HOW DID CHARLIE GET HERE?
Charlie came to us when his previous owners could no longer care for him and has been working hard to build his confidence while in our care.
PERSONALITY:
- Enjoys affection, play, and training with people he knows and trusts.
- Loves treats, stuffies, and rope toys.
- Responds well to his name, sit, and recall when distractions are limited.
- Is becoming better at recovering from startling experiences and triggers.
- Can become highly anxious and reactive when encountering other dogs or unfamiliar distractions.
- May become vocal when overwhelmed or triggered.
- Needs plenty of space from other dogs and gradual, carefully managed exposure to new experiences.
- Is still building confidence and engagement on leash.
- Has been eliminating outdoors in the shelter, but his housetraining may need some refinement as he settles into a new home.
WHAT TYPE OF HOME?
- No other dogs or cats in the household.
- An adult only home.
- A very experienced adopter with previous experience supporting dogs with high anxiety and fear-related behaviours.
- A securely fenced yard is required.
- No condos, apartments, high-rises, or homes with shared walls.
Charlie is currently taking melatonin, gabapentin, and fluoxetine to help manage his anxiety and support his ability to settle. A starter supply of his medications will be sold on adoption for continuity of care. Any changes to his medications, including adjustments or discontinuation, should only be made in consultation with a veterinarian.
Charlie has made encouraging progress in our care and continues to show that he can learn to navigate unfamiliar experiences more confidently with the right support. He will need consistency, patience, and realistic expectations as he transitions into a home. Once he has a trusted person to guide him, he has a much better chance of continuing to thrive.
If you have experience supporting high-anxiety dogs and are ready to help Charlie build confidence through patience, understanding, and training, apply to adopt Charlie today!
