Before You Decide

We understand that giving up a pet is never an easy decision. If you’re considering surrendering your pet, we’re here to help support you through the process.

Before proceeding with a surrender, we encourage you to reach out. Our team may be able to offer support or resources to help you keep your pet at home.

If you’re struggling to care for your pet due to financial or other challenges, please contact us to learn more about services that may be able to help.

Contact our team at intake@hsomh.ca or phone at (905) 845-1551 ext. 156.

We accept surrenders by appointment only and only from residents of Oakville or Milton. This helps ensure we have the appropriate space and resources to care for your pet.

If we are at capacity, we may ask you to wait until space becomes available. In such cases, you’ll be offered a spot on our waiting list.

If you are experiencing an emergency or crisis, contact the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton immediately at intake@hsomh.ca or call 905-845-1551 ext. 156.

Steps to Surrender a Pet

Step 01

Make sure you live in our service area

We only accept pets from Oakville or Milton residents. Proof of residence will be required.

Step 02

Fill out the online surrender form

This gives us important information about your pet to help us plan for their care and next steps.

If you require a paper form or support to complete this form, please contact us directly.

Step 03

Schedule appointment

Once your form is submitted, our team will review it and get in touch to discuss next steps or schedule an appointment.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

All pets must arrive on a leash or in a secure carrier.

At your appointment, please bring:

  • Any medical or adoption records you have
  • Rabies certificate or sterilization proof, if available
  • Proof of ownership for the animal if possible (e.g. adoption papers, veterinary records)
  • Photo ID showing Oakville or Milton address

You’ll be asked to:

  • Sign paperwork transferring ownership of the pet to HSOMH
  • Complete an Animal History Form to help us better understand your pet’s needs

Note: Once your pet is surrendered, the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton will determine the best possible outcome for the animal. This may include adoption, transfer to a rescue, or, in rare cases, euthanasia. You will not be notified of the final outcome.

Surrender Fees

The surrender fee varies depending on the type of animal and helps offset the cost of caring for them while they’re with us. The exact amount will be explained during the intake process. If the fee is a concern, please let us know and we’re happy to discuss options that may be available to support you.

We’re Here to Help

Need Help Rehoming Your Pet?

If you’re considering rehoming your pet yourself, we’ve put together a Pet Resource Guide to help you do it safely and responsibly. Rehoming directly can be a great way to find a loving home without surrendering your pet to a shelter.

Adopted from HSOMH?

If you adopted from HSOMH, we are here to support you and your pet. If you are no longer able to care for them, please contact our team.

We will always accept animals adopted from us back and ask that they be returned to our care rather than rehomed independently.

Questions?

We’re here to help. Please don’t hesitate to contact our team with any questions or to begin the surrender process. Contact our team at intake@hsomh.ca or phone at (905) 845-1551 ext. 156.
