Emergency Boarding Services

For Families in Transition

The Families in Transition (FIT) Program is a partnership between Halton Region and the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton. The program offers temporary care for pets when their owners are experiencing homelessness and need to access shelter.

Within Halton Region, the majority of shelters are not set up to receive people with their pets. Being separated from a pet during such a difficult time can deeply impact a person’s well-being and mental health. The FIT program was created to keep people and their pets together by offering temporary foster care, boarding, medical care, supplies and food until stable housing can be secured.

Note: Due to high demand and limited shelter space, there may be a 24 to 48-hour delay in responding to new inquiries.

Who Is This For?

The FIT program supports individuals and families in Halton Region who are:

  • Experiencing sudden housing loss or homelessness
  • Entering emergency shelters where pets are not permitted
  • Living in Halton and working with an approved case worker

Pets play a vital role in emotional well-being and family stability and we’re here to help ensure you don’t have to go through this time alone.

The Ellis family found themselves temporarily without housing and didn’t want to surrender their two beloved cats. Thanks to support from Halton Region, they connected with HSOMH. Matrix and Elsa were boarded with us, received medical care, and were safely reunited with their family when the time was right.
