History of The Charlie Fund

The Charlie Fund is a lifeline for animals in need of urgent or specialized medical care at the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton. Thanks to this fund, pets facing injury, illness, or extraordinary circumstances get a second chance at life. Every contribution helps turn hardship into healing.

The fund began in 1985, when a Border Collie named Charlie arrived at the shelter with a severely injured leg that couldn’t be saved. A special fundraising campaign covered the cost of his surgery, and with the community’s support, Charlie recovered and went on to live a long, happy life in a new home.

What started with one dog’s journey has grown into a lifesaving tradition. For more than 36 years, the Charlie Fund has provided emergency medical care for animals in crisis, expanding from just a handful of cases each year to more than 100 annually.

Charlie Fund Success Stories

Walnut

Walnut had no appetite, was emaciated and dehydrated, which required emergency care. With antibiotics and treatment for an immune-related problem, as well as B-12 shots, he has improved. He gained his weight back following a slow feeding plan. This sweet dog has since become well enough to be neutered.

Isaac

Isaac has a heart condition. He is on a daily medication to help his heart function and keep him stable. This gentle cat also has inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is managed by a prescribed diet.
