Leader in Training Program

General Information

Our Leader in Training (LIT) program is designed for teens aged 14 to 17 who want to build leadership and teamwork skills while working with animals. LITs shadow our Kids & Critters Summer Camp staff, helping to lead activities and teach campers about animal care, dog safety, and more.

Accepted participants will attend an evening training session before assisting with one week of camp. Working closely with staff means every LIT receives supervision, guidance, and feedback to support their growth.

LITs can also earn up to 40 community service hours, making it a great way to gain experience, give back, and build a strong resume.

Application & Selection Process

Applications open in mid-March and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Teens can apply by email to education@hsomh.ca or in person.

Qualified applicants will be contacted for interviews on an ongoing basis. Applications will close once all spots are filled.

Please note: Unsuccessful candidates will be contacted after the application period ends.

Cost

The fee for the program is $175. This covers lunch on the Friday of your camp week, t-shirt, LIT manual, and training session.

LITs must attend one of two mandatory training sessions. They are three hours in length and are held at the end of June.

Hours

LITs are required to be on-site from 8 am to 4pm every day that they are volunteering.

Location

The camp is held at the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton. The address is 445 Cornwall Road in Oakville.

Dates

The LIT program runs alongside the Kids & Critters Summer Camp throughout July and August. On the application, LITs are asked to indicate their available week(s). If accepted, we do our best to assign each LIT to one of their preferred weeks.

Animal Interaction

While there is some animal interaction each day of camp, the primary focus for LITs will be supervising and interacting with the campers, and assisting with games, crafts, and other activities.

Registration

Due to the large number of applicants, LIT applications for 2025 have now been closed.
