Since 1936, the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton (HSOMH) has been a safe haven for animals in need and a trusted resource for the people who care about them. We’re more than a shelter. We’re a community hub where compassion, education, and action come together to strengthen the human–animal bond.
People often walk through our doors expecting to adopt a pet, drop off a donation, or volunteer for a few hours. What they leave with is so much more: new connections, unexpected joy, and a lasting place in a community that cares deeply for pets and people alike.
To protect and improve the lives of animals by supporting our community in discovering, strengthening, and preserving the human–animal bond.
Dedicated to supporting people and their pets, helping animals, and promoting animal welfare within our communities.
We want to make a positive impact – not just with what we do, but with who we are. We show up with compassion and care, fostering an environment of connection.
We’re committed to growing, learning and sharing what we know with those around us. Informed decisions are the best decisions.
We put animals and people first. We are serious about making a meaningful and measurable impact on pets and people. We have goals and work hard to achieve them.
We do what we say we’re going to do. We’re transparent and trustworthy. We behave in ways that inspire confidence from our community.
We believe in building strong, collaborative relationships and communities. Our partnerships help us grow, learn and adapt.
We work together with kindness and integrity.
At HSOMH, we care for approximately 300 animals at any given time, whether they are lost, rescued, or surrendered and awaiting their new beginning. Every animal that comes through our doors receives shelter, medical care, and the compassion they deserve.
We are a low-euthanasia shelter, only making that decision in cases of untreatable illness, serious quality-of-life concerns, dangerous aggression, or public safety risks. Every adoptable dog, cat, puppy, kitten, and rabbit is spayed or neutered before going to their new home, helping address pet overpopulation in our communities.
This work is made possible by our dedicated volunteers, donors, and community partners. From walking dogs to assisting at events, volunteers are an essential part of our team and a big part of the reason we can continue to provide exceptional care to animals and the people who love them.
Animals are cared for until they can be matched with loving families, giving every pet a chance at happiness.
Including by-law enforcement and 24-hour emergency response for sick or injured pets and wildlife.
Like our Pet Food Bank, low-cost microchipping clinics, and advice on caring for your pet, empowering owners to provide the best care possible.
In schools, through camps, and at community events—teaching compassion, safety, and animal welfare to inspire the next generation of kind hearts.
To support our mission and help both people and pets in our communities, fostering connections that make a lasting difference for all.
HSOMH began in January 1936, when a group of concerned citizens created a safe haven for lost and abandoned animals. By 1939, our work had expanded to include responding to animal welfare calls, marking the start of our advocacy role.
Our first shelter on Morrison Road moved to our current Cornwall Road location in 1951, giving us more room to care for animals and connect with the community. In 2020, Ontario’s Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act established Canada’s first fully provincial animal welfare enforcement system, reshaping how protection services are delivered across the province.
From our humble beginnings to today, our mission remains the same: helping animals in need and supporting the people who love them.
In 2024, your support helped us create real change for animals and people across our community. Here’s what we accomplished together:
Every action you take helps us continue providing essential care for animals and support for the people who love them.
