On February 3, we were thrilled to share the extraordinary news that the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton and Halton has received a transformational $10 million gift from longtime supporter Klaus Bytzek.
This historic contribution, the largest in our organization’s history, is a powerful vote of confidence in our mission and in the future of animal welfare in our community.
Mr. Bytzek has supported HSOMH for many years, and his compassion for animals is evident not only in his words but in his actions. His hope is that this generosity will inspire others to give, and we are deeply grateful for the example he has set.
“This is an extraordinary gift from a truly remarkable philanthropist,” said Executive Director Jeff Vallentin. “Mr. Bytzek’s generosity brings us significantly closer to realizing a new shelter and ensures a bright future for the animals and families who rely on us.”
This gift comes at a critical time.
As many of you know, we recently sold our current property at 445 Cornwall Road to the Town of Oakville, which is leasing it back to us while we search for a new home. Our existing shelter, built in 1951, is long past its usable life. We outgrew it years ago. Today we are working in a building that is in significant need of repair and operating out of seven mobile trailers just to meet daily demands.
It is not good enough for our staff and volunteers, and it is not good enough for the animals in our care.
We are actively searching for at least five acres of property where we can build a modern, purpose-built animal centre designed to meet the growing needs of Oakville, Milton, and Halton. Our vision is to expand from 13,000 square feet to approximately double that amount of operational space. That additional space will allow us to care for more animals, provide proper enrichment and exercise areas for dogs, and create dedicated room for youth programs, humane education, and community engagement. We envision a facility that supports animal welfare while also bringing the community together in meaningful ways.
Mr. Bytzek’s generosity provides critical lead support to help make this vision possible, but as transformational as this gift is, our need continues.
HSOMH relies on donations to fund our charitable services and programs. Hundreds of animals depend on us at any given time. Veterinary care, behavioural support, emergency response, and basic necessities do not pause while we plan for the future.
This is a moment of incredible momentum and optimism. We are energized. We are motivated. And we are more determined than ever to serve more animals and more families in a space worthy of them.
If Mr. Bytzek’s extraordinary generosity inspires you, we invite you to join him. Every gift, large or small, helps us care for animals today while we build a brighter, more compassionate future for tomorrow.
Together, we are creating something truly special for pets and the people who love them, now and for generations to come.
